Borrowed

“Immature poets

imitate;

mature poets

steal.”

Somewhere in between immature and mature
he recognized that everything he knew
had been borrowed from someone
or he saw it in a book

Somewhere in between immature and mature
he recognized that feelings and emotions
could barely be controlled by his thoughts
and he learned how to stuff them

He grew in understanding and realized that
the older he was and the more he learned
the more he understood how little he knew
and others knew how little it was

He grew in understanding and realized that
all of his time would eventually pass
and his legacy would be determined by others
and his ego would never outlive him

During that time when there was a drive and the passion
he chased the world to see how it goes
and the faster he went the further behind he became
and the world just smiled at his efforts

During that time when there was a drive and the passion
he loved with a lust and he hated with a rage
and the more he tried to justify his existence
the world just turned away and went on without him

Eventually there was a time he could not remember
when his hearts desire became a smoldering ember
and his time was spent in reflecting on what
could have, should have and would have been

Eventually there was a time he could not remember
and he cried without shedding a tear
and he reached out to embrace the spirits of the past
hoping that they would teach him, show him

how to rest in peace …
