feet spread wide he could span the bay
lumberjacks said he was the best they ever saw
friend of the mountain lion and the bear
his custom was to appear out of nowhere

they say he stood as high as the redwoods
natives believed he was a child of the gods
for miners he was a man they could really dig
his knack was helping people in distress
he was the guardian angel of the pony express

he helped tame America’s wild wild west
avoiding praise he was forever modest
for the pioneer he was the ultimate trailblazer
he was a very close cousin of Paul Bunyan
descended from a chief of the Chipewyan

he answered to the name of Mighty Mike
there was not a creature he did not like
for the homesteader he was a guiding light
his spirit, they say, still lives in the mountains
gurgling streams and big skies his favorite domains

pay homage to Mike whenever you can
seek peace between nature and the human
