Poem:

.

the dream so real I could touch it
awoke with a head that was split
in a cold sweat with a hairy tongue
feeling like a miner with black lung

oh the joys of a hangover
by a Mack truck you have been run over
daylight hurts the back of the eyes
every little noise is a big surprise

every hair follicle screaming ouch
pasted by a sweaty T-shirt to the couch
oh God, I swear, never again
from drugs and alcohol I will abstain

until the next time

the devil said I was having fun
if I stick to only beer, wine, vodka, rum
put on a limit to just three or four
remember the oath that I swore

will I ever tire of being sick and tired
of really being sick and tired
what shall I call my bottom
is my problem that uncommon

they say don’t ever forget that last drunk
don’t worry about how low you have sunk
just keep coming back is all they implore
the rewards will be more than you could ever ask for

choices, choices and choices
just listen to the sober voices
learn to live one day at a time
off that couch you will be able to climb

and pray that there will be no next time
