Vast Eternity

“But at my back I always hear
Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.”

Poem:

.

the horseshoe above the door was facing down
my luck had fallen to the ground
up the ladder with hammer in hand
was this the portal to Alice’s wonderland

it was a tap, tap, tap on the tack
step on a crack you break your mother’s back
righted the horseshoe without hitting my thumb
could I walk, talk and chew bubble gum

superstitions growing out of old wives tales
nevermind is to ignore the minor details
the poem is seeking something metaphorical
the only help that I can give is strictly rhetorical

to sit in rapture, to muse and ponder
how much time does a poet squander
back to the luck which is now on the ground
the old sage said that if I am prepared it can again be found

so to be prepared one needs to read more
one cannot expect life to come through the back door
love we know comes in through the window
it is death who uses the back door for his innuendo

be ready Freddy, keep the front door unlocked
keep your notebook of good ideas well stocked
may your horseshoe always be turned upward
and let today’s dessert be your favorite custard
