“What’s writing
really about?
It’s about trying to
take fuller possession
of the reality
of your life.”

it is raining, God’s most precious gift
the tonic that gives everyone a lift
animal and vegetable alike
even the little boy whose name is Mike
except when it was time to clean behind his ears
Mother only laughed at his crocodile tears
an Aquarius, he took to water like a fish
his favorite snack was Mother’s knish
he was a sneak and from the truth he fled
his whole world existed inside his head
a loner by nature, he never had a friend
never someone on whom you could depend
drinking too much never helped his disposition
that and his total lack of any ambition
too many jobs to count, many marriages failed
could never remember how many times he was jailed
a devine miracle, God struck him sober
he became a human instead of an ogre
he found his soul, a smile gave him a facelift
behind the rain he is now God’s next best gift

life is a series of metaphors
every good poem contains one or three
explaining the whats and wherefores
what has been and what shall be
metaphors that compare the plant
thoughts that reflect the animal
philosophies by Emmanuel Kant
ideas that are hopefully compatible
what has my life been like
over the river and through the woods
forever paying tolls on the turnpike
or dreaming of a life awash with falsehoods.
will tomorrow be a different allegory
or more of the same boring trite cliches
knowing everyone will tell a different story
the ignorant feigning an attitude blase
my choice of analogies is to be smart
or should the simile be clever
or should I lead with my heart
who me, my life a metaphor, never . . .
