holding hands wherever we go
walking is like skipping on air
both of us are proof in the photo
what’s outside our world we don’t care

friendship rings we proudly displayed
hickies on the neck we tried to hide
at home the parents silently prayed
she’s just too young to be a bride

soul mates from the very start
decades spent together
love conveyed heart to heart
surviving all kinds of weather

a friendship that never grew old
youths to old codgers, never a worry
a true love that never went cold
lucky are those who made this journey

he loved everything
he overused and abused the word
how can one love a bee sting
his love had become absurd

a beautiful soul taught him to like
appreciate became a new guideline
a new kindness invaded his psych
love was the tingling up and down his spine

he learned to hesitate before he judged
the single label ‘love’ did no longer work
another’s passion he no longer begrudged
he discovered a real life and love was a perk

for the rest of his life he spread the joy
admonishing others not to misuse the word love
he encouraged kindness the most to employ
to share the compassion we receive from above
