they died so young
taken by the disease of addiction

I’m mad
so many songs to be sung
for some families a predisposition

granddad
the first to be stung
but not the first to suffer from the trip to perdition

dad
heard it from grandmother’s tongue
but he chose to ignore the dreaded admonition

son
much to young to see how the door swung
hopefully the last to suffer from this malediction

I’m glad
on the ladder there is one more rung
a twelve step program to keep the devil in remission

has to be the best at answering the phone

the wine cooler is best for chilling,
not cold enough for the ice cream cone

the dentist is known for his drilling,
skills the patient wishes he has hone

the turkey is enhanced by its filling,
everyone fighting for the wishbone

events are more social with tailgate grilling
fanatics with seats near the home team’s end zone

artisan breads start with unique milling,
you don’t need to be British to enjoy a scone

it is an art to eat soup without spilling,
slurping accepted in the right tone

feeding the pigs is sloppy swilling,
a job much better done by a drone

to each their own for what is thrilling,
some can even do it alone

the garden weeds pulled by tilling,
the lazy cover everything with stone

the start of every success begins with willing
doing God’s will can put you on a throne

in the name of religion can man stop killing,
unfounded fear and ego to which we are prone
