“You’re a cavity in my oasis,
You’re a porthole in my sea,
You’re a stretch of the imagination
every time you look at me.
You’re an ocean in my wineglass,
You’re a Steinway on the beach,
You’re a captivating audience,
an exciting Rembrandt,
A Masterpiece.”

lies, lies, lies
why must the alcoholic lie
the truth would be so simple
has it something to do with being a mental cripple
the brain is on backwards
life is lived in the negative
many take pride in being bad actors
for many it is in the genes, mostly inherited
lying to themselves, denial
lying to others, justification
their most fervent prayer is for a mistrial
for family and friends it is just frustration
the drunk is anything but modest
trouble is he cannot get honest
he is addicted, body, mind and soul
a good argument for population control
if they want the help there is a way out
kind words spoken quietly, no need to shout
the miracles rely on a Higher Power
and a judicious using of ones willpower
willingness to change is the most difficult must
in himself he must learn to trust
following the suggestions there is a guarantee
to find a life that is happy, joyous and free

to report
that my

Poem:
.
growing up, learning to face the fears
enjoying the feelings that bring me to tears
too many years lost to the addiction
learned to live with the incurable affliction
it all started with admit and accept
belief in a power greater than my intellect
willingness to accept guidance from above
feeling the power of unconditional love
wrote the biography, both good and bad
knowing the disease made me a deadbeat dad
prayed to God, told another human being
the fog lifted, forgiveness allowed the seeing
had to identify all the bad habits and traits
those things that were attributed to the fates
a lifelong endeavor to correct and amend
going to meetings that I must attend
indiscretions of the past had to be cleared
another hurdle that was greatly feared
amends made by a changed attitude
a true faith in human nature renewed
errors and omissions promptly admitted
to a new way of life firmly committed
gratitude, prayers and meditation
to a Higher Power is given citation
His will is to be kind, tolerant and loving
in His guidance to be trusting
a spiritual awakening recognizes choices
gratitude expressed by many voices
a message carried to those still suffering
a program worked for those recovering
always trying to do the next right thing
happy, joyous and free we sing
steps to lift the soul from despair
a fellowship beyond compare
