to see your face;
you use works of art

born with his brain on backward
his negative thinking was never forward
he inherited an addictive personality
becoming a drunk was just a formality
he loved to experiment with all of the isms
every promise was subject to conditions
if you do this for me, I might do this for you
he rarely awoke, he usually came to
eventually, body, mind and soul became diminished
the shrink and the doc said that he was finished
he was completely estranged from family and friends
the preacher suggested that he start making amends
God stuck him dumb, said you have one last chance
ignore this and you will have had your last dance
the rooms of A A was were he was told to go
it was said they had a program he needed to know
the disease and the ego had a tremendous fight
in a fog, he could not figure it out quite right
keep coming back was all he could hear
a prayer might help the cravings to disappear
the miracle happened, he chose to submit
he had a problem, he had to admit
they first suggested one day at a time
then showed him the steps that he needed to climb
the fog lifted, he learned to listen
he knew there was no cure for the terrible addiction
he enjoyed the paradox of helping others
he was happy to be a part of the band of brothers
he made the amends, he made the change
his attitude and thinking he did rearrange
staying out of trouble was no longer boring
doing the next right thing kept him soaring
a poster child for it can be done
a happy soul he has become

“And above all,
watch with glittering eyes
the whole world around you
because the greatest secrets
are always hidden in
the most unlikely places.
Those who don’t believe in magic
will never find it.”

“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:”
Thus St. Francis of Assisi begins his prayer
one soul at a time asking love to increase
replacing negatives one need not bear
from seven negatives, each a positive given
a personal dedication to prayer votives
become willing to accept God’s admonition
sympathise, love, abandon selfish motives
“divine Master” give me the strength
to do what is right at any price
the courage to go to any length
to make this world a place that is nice
know the wonderful paradoxes,
that you must give to receive
satisfaction that the soul transfixes
love more for happiness to achieve
have faith, there is nothing to despair
enjoy a beautiful life given for us to share
