“Poetry resembles metaphysics:
one does not mind one’s own,
but one does not like anyone else’s.”

~ Samuel Butler

metaphysics

violent storm front
rain coming horizontal
birds know how to hide

Poem:

who would I choose for my other persona
would I want to be rich and powerful
could I be a humble saint with a bright corona
boring dull and drab or over the top colorful
was Hemingway the old man of the sea
was Coleridge really the ancient mariner
must I be a sailor or just a captain wanna be
could I pass myself off as a wandering foreigner
why just one, how about a new one every day
butcher, baker, candlestick maker
whatever whim or fancy that blows my way
a quiet quaker or an obnoxious shaker
could Thomas Pynchon make me into a flea
I guess I would just rather be little old me

“Was not writing poetry
a secret transaction,
a voice answering a voice?”

nobody but you
alone is not possible

Poem:

to myself only am I known
the heart and soul always masked
always pretending to be alone
the projected persona is gregarious
the insides are roiling and knotted
if you knew, it would be hilarious
at one time the emotions were perceived as suffering
over the years those feelings have become quotidian
I now find that my misery is habitual and comforting
found a friend with whom I could commensurate
a loving Higher Power who has all of the answers
He notes that my emotional responses are inveterate
new sympathies for the old dog are difficult at best
a better way of thinking has become my quest
