Poem:

.

he died
his brain was fried
an alcoholic of the worst ilk
he drank booze like it was milk

more than a few trips to the detox
the disease to him a confusing flummox
so many rehabs he couldn’t remember
to a more than few he was a charter member

every time he lied he’d give you a dime
it was always the truth, just at the wrong time
the homeless community knew him as a thief and beggar
the only friend he ever had was the local bootlegger
never knew where he was or where he was going
it depended on which way the wind was blowing

fired from every job, he never established a career
his bad habit was showing up smelling like beer
bad relationships, he had more than a few exes
everyone knew he was an avowed sexest

he drank booze like it was milk
an alcoholic of the worst ilk
his brain was fried
he died

In My Writing

.

“I looked at myself,

and I just said,

‘Well, you know, I can sing,

but I’m not the greatest

singer in the world.

I can play guitar very well,

but I’m not the greatest

guitar player in the world.’

So I said, ‘Well, if I’m going

to project an individuality,

it’s going to have to be in my writing.'”

Poem:

.

.

she was very very alone
his demise was very sudden
her whole life was overthrown
the house was dark and sullen

a glass of wine helped get her to sleep
within weeks it took a whole bottle
the labels went from quality to cheap
from little sips to gulps full throttle

she was the octogenarian who never drank
no one was ready for this big surprise
the discovery had the youngest child to thank
family and friends could only surmise

the sedate old lady did not really fit in
the rehab full of junkies and crazies
for her this behavior was a mortal sin
depressed,
she only wanted to be pushing up daisies

introduced to a twelve step fellowship
she found friends who really understood
there were steps to avoid the guilt trip
and a path towards possible sainthood

she regained her faith by serving others
her specialty is helping grieving mothers
today she demonstrates that age does no matter
myths about the disease she is able to shatter

she has become God’s shining example
for many, her testimony is more than ample
she shares the lessons as she was told
never too young, never ever too old
