“Every word
was once
a poem.”
.
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Elfje
.
Every
Thought was
Once a poem
Before there were words
Written
.
Haiku:
.
sensual overload
nature explodes in the spring
words fail to describe
.
Poem:
.
love, life, history, mystery
poetic themes that include adultery
written to pique the imagination
another vague form of communication
happy to expand the vocabulary
singing like the proverbial canary
to some the words create the music
others hear only the elevator musak
few are those who hear the Universe in silence
most serious concerns for their mental imbalance
today we will let the word choose the poem
sound or meaning, exuberant or solemn
always the poem that never ends
lame excuses and false amends
form, meter, rhyme the words intend
doesn’t every poet just pretend.

“Was not writing poetry
a secret transaction,
a voice answering a voice?”
.
~ Virginia Woolf
.
.
Elfje:
.
sound
carrying thoughts
tone and inflection
quietly in my mind
voices
.
Haiku:
.
nobody but you
alone is not possible
the universe speaks
.
Poem:
.
to myself only am I known
the heart and soul always masked
always pretending to be alone
the projected persona is gregarious
the insides are roiling and knotted
if you knew, it would be hilarious
at one time the emotions were perceived as suffering
over the years those feelings have become quotidian
I now find that my misery is habitual and comforting
found a friend with whom I could commensurate
a loving Higher Power who has all of the answers
He notes that my emotional responses are inveterate
new sympathies for the old dog are difficult at best
a better way of thinking has become my quest
