Been There, Done That

.

“I have been here before,

But when or how I cannot tell:

I know the grass beyond the door,

The sweet keen smell,

The sighing sound,

the lights around the shore.

so many poems not written
great thoughts too so forgotten
subliminal meanings well hidden
noble ideas that refuse to listen

masterpieces that appear in a dream
a tale that will fill a voluminous tome
a new twist on an ancient scheme
to many a reader it may strike home

the poem has a mind of its own
once begun, it goes to the rhyme
using words the writer has known
no fifty centers, some just a dime

sitting with writing paraphernalia at hand
the page an empty space staring back
trying to remember that great grand strand
nothing but static playing on the soundtrack

every topic appears to have been used and abused
love, war, voyage, nature, failure, success
addled, confused, the poor brain bemused
praying to the poetry God’s who are due a redress

who knew that the poem was addicted to itself
time to put this pathological idea up on a shelf

Poem:

Poetry is old words
Poetry is old ideas
mix the two together
to come up  with something new
hoping that they rhyme

big words are rarely necessary
just when you need an alliteration
little words will fill the bill
as long as you don’t repeat them
over and over, all of the time

sometimes there is a story to tell
often it is just about feelings
only minutes to finish most of a thought
then hours to find just the right word
to complete the line

from love to war
mariners lost at sea
poetry reflects the dreams of man
moves the heart and works the brain
usually inferring the murky sublime

for the writer and the reader
it is the challenge to love the verse
metaphors difficult to decipher
silliness made too obvious
poetry becomes the victimless crime
